How to Choose a Vitamin C Serum That Actually Works

Most vitamin C serums are bought on the strength of the number on the bottle. That number is close to the least useful thing on the label.

Vitamin C is one of the few skincare actives with a genuinely strong evidence base. It is an antioxidant, it interferes with excess pigment production, and it plays a role in collagen synthesis. For uneven tone and dullness — the two things most people are actually trying to fix — it is a reasonable first active to add.

It is also one of the easiest products to buy badly.

The forms, and which ones matter

"Vitamin C" on a label can mean several different molecules with quite different behaviour.

L-ascorbic acid is pure vitamin C and the form with the strongest research behind it. It is also unstable — it degrades on contact with light, air and heat — and it is acidic, which means it can sting. Effective concentrations sit between 10% and 20%, and the formula needs a low pH (around 3 to 3.5) to penetrate.

Sodium ascorbyl phosphate (SAP) and magnesium ascorbyl phosphate (MAP) are stable derivatives that convert to ascorbic acid in the skin. They are gentler, do not require a low pH, and are considerably less irritating. They are also less potent per unit, and less well studied. For sensitive skin, or as a first vitamin C, they are the sensible choice.

Tetrahexyldecyl ascorbate (THD ascorbate) is oil-soluble, very stable, and penetrates well. Expensive, gentle, and increasingly common in higher-end formulas. Good for dry or sensitive skin.

Ascorbyl glucoside and 3-O-ethyl ascorbic acid are middle-ground derivatives — stable, mild, moderately effective.

If you have never used vitamin C, start with a derivative. If you know your skin tolerates actives well and you want maximum effect, L-ascorbic acid at 10-15% is the evidence-backed choice.

Why 30% is not better than 15%

Higher is not linearly better. Absorption of L-ascorbic acid plateaus around 20%, and above that you get more irritation without more benefit. A 30% serum is a marketing number.

For most people, 10-15% L-ascorbic acid, or 5-10% of a derivative, is the useful range. If a brand is competing on concentration alone, that usually means the formula has nothing else to talk about.

What else should be in the bottle

The supporting cast matters more than the headline percentage.

Vitamin E (tocopherol) and ferulic acid stabilise L-ascorbic acid and, in combination, meaningfully increase its photoprotective effect. The classic well-studied formula is 15% L-ascorbic acid with 1% vitamin E and 0.5% ferulic acid. If you see all three together, that is a formulator who knows the research.

Opaque, airtight packaging. This is not a detail. A clear dropper bottle of L-ascorbic acid is degrading on the shelf and will keep degrading every time you open it. Dark glass, an airless pump, or a tube is a genuine signal of quality — arguably a stronger one than the percentage.

How to tell it has gone off

Oxidised vitamin C turns yellow, then orange, then brown. A fresh L-ascorbic acid serum is colourless to very pale straw.

If yours has gone deep yellow or orange, it has lost most of its potency. It is not dangerous, but you are applying a serum that no longer does what you bought it for. Some oxidation products can also cause a temporary yellow-brown tint on the skin.

Derivative-based serums are far more stable and this is much less of an issue — one of the main reasons to choose them.

Once opened, an L-ascorbic acid serum has roughly three months of real potency. Buy smaller bottles rather than large ones, and store it away from the bathroom, where heat and steam accelerate degradation. A cupboard in a cooler room is better; the fridge is better still.

How to use it

Morning, after cleansing, before moisturiser and sunscreen. Vitamin C is an antioxidant and pairs logically with sun protection — the two together do more than either alone.

Start two or three times a week, not daily, especially with L-ascorbic acid. Build up as your skin tolerates it. A brief tingle on application is common; sustained stinging, redness or flaking is not, and means either the concentration is too high or the pH is too low for you.

Pairing: the old advice that vitamin C and niacinamide cannot be used together is largely a myth, derived from experiments at high heat that do not reflect how products are used. In practice, most people use both without issue. If you find the combination causes flushing, use one in the morning and one at night.

Vitamin C and retinol are best separated — vitamin C in the morning, retinol at night. Not because they neutralise each other, but because using two actives at once is a reliable way to irritate your skin and not know which one caused it.

Realistic expectations

Vitamin C is a slow, cumulative product. Expect eight to twelve weeks before you can fairly judge it, and expect improvement in overall brightness and evenness rather than the disappearance of specific dark spots.

For stubborn pigmentation — melasma in particular — vitamin C is a supporting player. The things that move the needle are consistent daily sunscreen and, often, a prescription treatment. A serum alone will not resolve melasma, and any product promising it is overselling.

The short version

Buy a 10-15% L-ascorbic acid serum with vitamin E and ferulic acid in opaque, airtight packaging, in a bottle small enough to finish in three months — or a derivative serum if your skin is sensitive. Use it in the morning, under sunscreen. Replace it when it turns orange.
